Over the years our region has excelled in the fields of engineering, ICT, Agriculture, Institutional Management, Business and Entrepreneurship. The region has innovative initiatives of member institutions learning from each other so as to implement the TVET agenda in a more uniform manner. Through those initiatives, the institutions have grown exponentially over the years. For example, in the robotics mentoring programme, The Meru National Polytechnic specifically has guided all the member TVET institutions to excellent performance in Robotics Competitions over the past two years. The region has thrice produced a National Champion in the Robotics competitions at the NACOSTI National Science Week. This has enabled trainers from the region travel to Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam for the Asia Robotics competitions.
With the continent focusing on competency based curriculum, the region is working in partnership with Colleges and Institutions Canada (CICan) and Kenya Education for Employment Program (KEFEP) to design and develop competency based curriculum in liaison with the Curriculum Development, Accreditation and Certification Council (CDACC) together with the Ministry of Education Kenya. The two National Polytechnics in the region are at advanced levels in developing curriculums in the areas of Agriculture (The Meru National Polytechnic) and Agro processing (The Nyeri National Polytechnic).
The Meru National Polytechnic was competitively selected to participate in the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) – World Bank project. This project attracts over one billion Kenya shillings to develop a centre of excellence in Building Construction and Infrastructure Development.
