KIST was established in 1973 by the Kiambu community on Harambee basis (pulling together and raising funds by contributions from individual community members). Since its inception KIST has produced graduates who fit globally competitive needs of modern employers and the emerging challenges.
KIST is a (TVET) Institute under the Ministry of Education Science and Technology. It is a registered institution to offer Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurial Training. However, the institute is held in trust of the community by a Board of Trustees (BOT).This body serves an advisory role. The Board of Governors (BOG) which is appointed by MOHEST in consultation with the stakeholders oversees the day-to-day running of the institute.
The core function of KIST is therefore to undertake education and training in TVET programme, promote research and technological development, and disseminate information on innovations
The institution has an establishment of more than 164 highly qualified lecturers in their area of specialization. It has therefore acquired a well-defined teaching and training system that enables it to produce excellent performance and quality graduates in most of the courses.
KIST has acquired quality management system (QMS) certification by the International organization of standards (ISO 9001:2008) dated 7th November 2012 thus gave it a holistic approaches to training self driven graduates aimed at achieving Kenya Industrialization envisaged in the Vision 2030.The Institute has also adequately participates in National TIVET trade Fairs, Robots contests and Industrial awards.
